NCIC DATABASE TREE

1.     STOLEN PROPERTY,  WANTED PERSONS,  FEDERAL FUGITIVES - est. 1967: The original database contained about 100,000 records. E
st. 1975

2.     MISSING PERSONS - est. 1975: Database created to help law enforcement officials locate missing  ndividuals who are not wanted on criminal charges.

3.     UNIDENTIFIED PERSONS - est. 1983: Provides crossreference for unidentified bodies against missingperson records.

4.     CRIMINAL HISTORY est. 1983 - The Interstate Identification Index gives law enforcement quick access to criminal history records.

5.     U.S SECRET SERVICE est. 1983 - Database of individuals who are believed to pose a threat to the president.

6.     FOREIGN  FUGITIVE est. 1987 - Created in response to the increasing international nature of crime and law enforcement.

7.    GANGS AND  TERRORISTS est. 1995 - Established to help identify terrorists, criminal gangs and their members.

 

What is the NCIC daily volume use ?

The system processed 2 million transactions in its entire first year of operation. On March 15, 2002, NCIC reported a record-setting 3.3 million hits on that day alone, with the average response time per transaction at .15 second.

 

What is the purpose of having this database?

The purpose for having the NCIC background check database is to provide a computerized database ready for access by a criminal justice agency making an inquiry about crimes and criminals. This information assists authorized agencies in criminal justice and related law enforcement objectives.
