Why Is Gastric Bypass Surgery the Most Popular Weight Loss Surgery in the US?May 7, 2008

The question regarding gastric bypass is, “Why is it the most popular weight loss operation in the United States?” Well the answer is quite simple really. Until just recently the gastric bypass was the only weight loss surgery in the United States. While for the last decade lap band procedures have been performed successfully in Europe, it was only recently that it was brought into the U.S. and passed by the Food and Drug Administration. Furthermore, many Europeans are now going back in for a gastric bypass surgery after finding that the lap band procedure does not work for everyone.

Gastric bypass surgery is so popular because it works. Americans in general are considered to have the highest number of people in the world to be considered morbidly obese. All of these people year in and year out try everything under the sun to loose the excessive weight but in many cases they will never loose their weight only the money the spent in another failed fad. When all else seems lost and all other options have been tried, these people turn to medicine as a way to loose the weight and better their health. In return the gastric bypass helps them to loose most of their excess weight in a very short period of time leaving the patient to be able to get on with their newly changed lifestyle and eating habits.

Every year in America, one of the biggest and most popular New Year’s resolutions is to loose weight. For many people this may be a serious problem since in many cases this weight is not going anywhere once it has attached itself to a patient. You could always try to starve yourself, but unfortunately this never works out right. For starters, the human subconscious usually will not let us kill ourselves and the person soon finds themselves eating again. When the person starts to eat again as a precaution the body then decides to store even more food making the person more obese.

It is the gastric bypass surgery itself that allows a person to loose weight by the means of a quasi starvation in which the body does not even realize it is being done for the simple fact that it feels full after eating only a cup’s worth of food. This is accomplished by the new usable stomach area that the surgeon created during the procedure.

The gastric bypass is quick and it does the job as long as you are willing to fully commit to it. It is this that the gastric bypass surgery is the most popular form of weight loss surgery in the United States.

Skin Graft Care - Recovery Skin GraftingMay 6, 2008

When it comes to skin grafting, there are certain post operative care guidelines that need to be adhered to on order to minimize the chances of a skin graft failure. For starters, immediately following the skin graft, the surgeon will place sterile dressings to cover the skin recipient site. These sterile wraps will usually stay in place for a period of three days as taking it off early may cause the grafted skin to detach from the recipient site. Once this period is over, the site will then be wrapped with new dressings that will remain until the skin has fully healed.

After a patient undergoes a skin graft, the first stage they will go through is known as the regeneration period. During this period, the body will attempt to re-grow things like hair and sweat glands as well as sebaceous glands but in the case of a partial thickness skin graft  the sebaceous glands may not form which can lead to dry and itchy skin which requires that the patient use lotion to remedy.

There are several possible risks associated with a skin graft as well as just as many possible complications. It is important that no matter what you follow your surgeon’s directions precisely as a means of minimizing these chances. These complications can include things like the failure of the graft as well as rejection of it. Because of the open wounds, there is a great probability of a skin infection occurring at the recipient site. Furthermore, blood or fluid can build up underneath the graft which requires the draining of these bodily fluids. You may have to deal with fluid and blood weeping or oozing from the recipient site as well as the chance of hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is when the skin’s pigment does not come out the same as the pigment of the surrounding skin. In some cases this can be remedied with time, but in others it may last forever.

Making sure that you take care of the graft area after having undergone a skin graft is imperative as the rate for failure or rejection of the grafts increases dramatically in the event that they are not closely monitored and well taken care of. How Soon Will I See Liposuction Results?April 19, 2008

If you are planning on undergoing a liposuction surgery then you already know that you have some great expectations regarding the outcome of the procedure. Some of these expectations may be achieved while at the same time others may be overly exaggerated. Making sure that you discuss with your surgeon your expectations thoroughly will help make sure that the outcome is closer to what you are expecting.

Many people want to know though as to how soon their results will be visible following their liposuction procedure. The truth is while the fat will be gone immediately, there will also be swelling and bruising and pain and even numbness. All of these will affect the outcome of the surgery but only for a short period of time until the recovery period is completed. It is then when you will see the outcome the best.

Within a few days as the fluids completely drain out of the area that the liposuction was performed and as the swelling wears off you will start to notice the results of the liposuction. These noticeable results of the liposuction will first be visible most likely after about 2 or 3 days following the liposuction procedure.

All of the swelling and lumpiness of the treated area will go down by the end of the first week as well as your ability to remove the compression garment and it is at this time that the outcome of the liposuction will be most apparent. All too often people who have undergone a liposuction will fall into depression regarding the outcome of the procedure based on the appearance of the body while it is still recovering and this should not be so. Make sure that you understand that you will not see the true results for at least a month following the liposuction surgery.

This full month gives the body ample time to finish healing itself. The swelling by this time should be gone as well as the sutures and drain tube. Furthermore the pain and other side effects of the liposuction will all be in the past and it will allow you to see the results more clearly. Face Lift Recovery Time - What is the Recovery Period of a Facelift?February 22, 2008

A face lift is a surgical procedure and therefore just like any surgical procedure there will be a necessary recovery time. When deciding on having a facelift performed, one of the most important items that you must take into consideration when deciding is that of the recovery period. In general, after you have your facelift, the surgeon will bandage up you face with the proper sterile dressings that will also need to be replaced at regular intervals to prevent any possible infections. These bonds not only help in the fight against infections but will also assist in the reduction of swelling and bruising. Behind your ear, there will be a drain tube to allow the excess fluid created by the body to flow out from under the skin.

You may also be given various pain medications as a surgical face lift recovery can be painful. In general, this entire healing process will take several weeks. In the first couple of days, you will notice the most amount of swelling. You will see bruises and swelling for up to two weeks after the procedure. You will need to keep your head elevated and try not to move around too much to help speed up the process.

You will most likely be allowed to go out for short periods of time after the first few days when the surgeon says that you can begin to use make-up to hide the blemishes while they are visible. You will notice some numbness of the face as well during this time.

Chances are, the surgeon will schedule you for a follow up after about 5 to 10 days so he or she can remove your stitches. Above all it is important to refrain from doing anything that can put strain on your face, this includes things like stress, laughing or frowning. Agitating the facial skin immediately following the surgery will lengthen the recovery period. If you can refrain from doing anything at all other than watch television, it is possible for the face to be ready for its grand debut in about 7 days, but if you go out and about or agitate the healing process, it can take as much as 2 or 3 weeks before you can show the world your new-old look.

In all reality, the recovery period of a face lift is entirely up to you and your ability to rest and stay relaxed for the time till your face is ready. Other things like your body’s immune system may also impede your recovery time. Check with your surgeon to ensure you understand how much time you will need to set aside for a full healthy recovery from you face lift.
