Elderly Woman Struck By A Train While Driving To The Hospital

Posted on November 26, 2008 at 9:44 AM - Link

A seventy seven year old grandmother crashed with the Ghan train at a railroad/highway crossing in Alice Springs while she was on her way to the hospital. Gwen Rogers was driving at the Ilparpa Road, when the train horn blew, it was too late and the crash occurred.

Grandma was fortunately uninjured but was shocked with the accident. She said that she looked one way and then looked the other way, then she heard the train horn.

The town's train officials stated that the Ghan train was travelling at forty seven kilometers per hour when the accident happened but the the town's speed limit is only forty kilometers per hour.

The safety issue at the Ilparpa road crossing has been raised previously. Justice Chris Burns has been taking complaints from residents and motorists over the railroad/highway crossing since 2004. Jodeen Carney, County Liberals MLA for Araluen, said that she has been raising this issue in the Parliament since 2004.

People are calling for an action to make the railroad crossing highway safer for motorists. The level crossing at Ilparpa has installed warning signs; but a boom gate, lights and bells must be put up to increase the safety.

Increase In Credit Card Usage Worries Banks

Posted on November 26, 2008 at 9:32 AM - Link

Curiously, banks are not too happy of the current rise in credit card usage which is expected to continue in the last quarter of the year. Banks typically want as much credit card holders as possible but this time around they are becoming more picky with the people they approve. Experts have discovered that people are using their credit cards more to avoid paying in cash.

Banks are starting to make it harder for people to qualify for a credit card; more banks only offer credit card deals to people that have an existing relationship with them. Banks have become hesitant in approving credit card applications because they expect a rise in delinquency rates when people use their credit cards; due to the fact that access to other types of credits is harder.

For the past six months, interest rates kept on rising. The outstanding monthly interest rates would go from three to three and a half percent which means that the interest rate will reach over fifty percent in a year.

Are You Having Some Issues With Handling Your Finances In The Family?

Posted on November 25, 2008 at 9:40 AM - Link

Quite a common scenario in families is the fact that spouses generally do not have the same behavior in handling their finances. It often poses a big problem and is commonly the root of arguments which can then put so much strain in the relationship. It is critical that early on,  spouses come up with a strategy  to prevent this very problem from ever happening in the first place.

If one is typically a saver and the other is not too keen on saving money, even though if the latter is not a big spender, there will come a point that an argument will arise. What you can do is to obtain an individual checking account for each one, this is to be used as your personal account/budget where you can do what you want with the money you have there. Now to maintain the the family's savings, a joint account can be obtained wherein money that goes in there is strictly for the family and could not be used for personal spending.

I think that it will greatly help the family in terms of drawing the line on what money can be and can not be used without consulting the other one. One can use his/her personal checking account if one wants to purchase something and the same goes for the other other one who wants to save his/her money.  Both can do whatever they want with their own money without touching the family's finances.

Many Families Still Choose Home Schooling

Posted on November 14, 2008 at 5:40 PM - Link

The Montgomery County Public schools and the Maryland State Department of Education study shows that around two thousand five hundred students are home schooled in Montgomery County. The figures  evidently shows that more and more families are choosing home schooling as a method to educate their children.

There are various reasons why families choose home schooling, the most common reason is that they want their children to study at home rather than in school. Other popular reasons are: being able to provide a better quality of education, their children learning at a pace that suit them; being able to detect their children's needs and in turn provide supplemental lessons for math, language arts, paragraph writing or what the need may be.

Home Schooling can also develop self motivation. Experts found out that home schooled students are more likely to find various solutions to a problem that are presented to them rather than being fed with answers without exercising their problem solving skills.

The Fraser Institute reported that the academic performance of home schooled kids are excellent. Records show that home schooled kids score in the eighty fifth percentile on tests, public school kids score in the fiftieth percentile.

Sugar Grove Residents Happy About The Implementation of Quiet Zones

Posted on November 14, 2008 at 4:26 PM - Link

People of Sugar Grove will soon be able to sleep soundly because the officials of the village are to build quiet zones wherein trains that pass by will be forbidden to sound their train horns.

The recently effected quiet zones took over two years of planning and comprehensive documentation with the Federal Railroad Administration. Local Rail-Highway Safety Program deems it doable. The project that costs almost thirty thousand dollars will put up quiet zone signs and concrete barriers at  intersections on main street and Dugan Road.

The barrier is a six by six inch elevated concrete that is built in the middle of the road. It is stretched sixty feet to the north and thirty feet to the south of the railroad tracks.

Credit Card Bill Passes The Lower House

Posted on November 14, 2008 at 4:09 PM - Link

The Bill that Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney authored (Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights),  has been voted by the house three hundred twelve to one hundred twelve. It will still need to pass the Senate and will need the approval of the President, but this is a welcome development for a lot of consumers nonetheless.

The Maloney bill will help every consumer to obtain a fair deal from credit card issuers. It will also prevent credit card issuers to change interest rates just like that. The Federal Reserve even described card issuers'  strategies as deceptive and anti competitive. Around fifty thousand people gave comments that mostly expressed anger toward the card issuers system.

Consumer advocates are still not resting on their laurels because they are afraid that the card issuers will make moves to talk the Federal Reserve into watering down the proposed regulations against the card issuers deceptive practices.  Ed Mierzwinski of USPIRG said that  Congresswoman Maloney hit three hundred and that it should express how badly people want the credit card bill to be made into a law; without any changes.

Home Schooled Kids Make Their Very Own Film

Posted on November 13, 2008 at 5:23 PM - Link

Five home schooled students from Adelaide Hills will be participating in the Little Big Shots Film Festival with their first film as their entry. Their film “We're Homeschooled” is a documentary that delves into the world of homeschooling in an attempt to educate people what it is all about.

The children's ages range from ten to fourteen years, Maise Fabry of Adelgate, the co director, said that they made their film in two months, She said when they visited different places, people would say things like, “Oh you are home schooled? Where do you go to do that?”

The crew interviewed different people and asked a set of questions relevant to home school. Fabry said  that most of the people they interviewed generally do not like to home school their children. The main reason why people do not like the concept of home schooling is that they think it won't develop the children's social skills. Fabry was sure that their film will show that home schooling can develop children's social skills.

In reality, most parents do think that there is a deficiency in social interaction in home schooling, but in fact home schooling parents make it a point that their children are exposed to people of all ages, which makes for a well adjusted child. Parents also provide quality education by giving the best math, science, language arts, writing lessons etc. around.

Posted on November 13, 2008 at 5:21 PM - Link

We all know that a lot of people have problems with their credit, the AD Council and the U.S. Treasury are working together to promote a campaign that aims to improve people's credit. The project concentrates on getting our youth educated regarding credit by means of ads.

The main theme revolves around the idea that keeping a good credit is very important. The campaign which is named Bad Credit Hotel has been broadcasting multimedia ad campaigns to promote awareness in credit. Ads are coursed through televisions, radios and the internet to reach out as much kids as possible.

It is a known fact that many people don't have that many financial options because of bad credit. Many students are guilty of abusing their credit cards because many could not control the urge to splurge. This is where the campaign comes in. But for those who presently have financial woes, there is nothing better to do than to start improving their credit. Obtaining a checking account, credit card, loan etc, are ways to improve it so long as it is handled correctly this time around.

The Boilermaker Special Trains

There are different rituals for every football team before they enter the stadium. For the Boilermakers, they enter along with the Boilermaker Special train and the crew that run it.

The Boilermaker Special V is the official mascot of Purdue. It has a smaller version, the X-tra Special VI. You'll see these every weekend during football season. The Special drives around the campus to provide free transportation for people.

Every Saturday at nine o' clock in the morning, the crew start doing their 'wake-ups'. It is a school tradidtion wherein they blast the the Special's train horns as they drive around the dorms to wake students up for the weekend football game. The trains then escort the All-American Marching Band as they enter the Slayter Hill and Ross Ade Stadium.

One of the pilots, Brant Bowen said that he just fell in love with the train after seeing it for the first time. He added, that the thought of having a train as the University's mascot is really cool.

A Computer Game Possible To Lower Insurance Cost...

Posted on October 29, 2008 at 4:02 AM - Link

There is a new computer game made to make your mind sharper. It is like a brain exercise machine, only it is a video game... Posit Science, the creator of the game is said to have developed this game for the use of elderly people, who seemed to have a hard time organizing their thoughts therefore resulting to some minor accidents sometimes even fatal ones.

All state Insurance is now offering the game as an experiment for Pennsylvania customers aged 50 and above. To see if their motor skills, reflexes, vision will improve and keep them away from accidents. The insurance company also sees this as an opportunity to offer low car insurance policies to those who have taken in the program in the near future.

This might be a promising venture. We will have to see what the results are with those who have taken the experiment. If this proves to be successful, it will be a great help for the elderly. As they would have something to do that is fun and would keep them away from accidents...

But for now, elderly people should get insurance to companies that are reputable, reliable and cheap. It is more convenient for them to get  online car insurance. Aside from being convenient, it is also more reliable and you could also find a lot of cheaper deals...

Credit Score Used To Determine Your Insurance Rates

Posted on October 27, 2008 at 6:26 PM - Link

Has your insurance risk been modified without giving you prior notice? A study shows that more than ninety percent percent of car insurers modify your insurance risk based on your current credit score.
Most insurers look into your credit report to determine your insurance risk, they believe that your insurance risk should be dependent upon the way you handle your finances.

Consumer advocates have strongly disagreed with this issue, they said that there is certainly no connection between your credit and your driving skill. A lot of people that have poor credit could very well pay over fifty percent in car insurance.

If there is no alteration done soon, insurers will continue to benefit from people with poor credit. What is even more appalling is the fact that insurers do not fully examine your credit history, they usually pinpoint a few items which they can use as basis to modify your insurance rate.

One of the things that makes sense right now is beat them in their own game by taking measures to improve your credit score. There are various ways that you can do to boost your credit score. Moves such as obtaining second chance checking account, keeping your balances low if you have credit cards, paying your bills on time and so on.

Standardized Test's Validity Examined

Posted on October 15, 2008 at 1:09 PM - Link

Almost eighty percent of Maine's grade eight students failed in the state's standardized writing test in '08. Education officials are investigating why so many students failed. State Education Commissioner Susan Gendron noted that the problem could be the test itself.

The writing test is an essay with the statement 'television may have a negative impact on learning'. There is a thorough set of instructions on how the test takers will be graded and two lists of pros and cons.

Gendron also noted that it is very likely that the children failed to understand what the test seeks to find out. The children responded emotionally instead of logically. Since the kids did not answer the way they are supposed to, the test failed to measure the children's writing skills.

In reality, the children know how to write. They are well provided with writing lessons that seeks to develop their proficiency in paragraph writing and the children's ability to write academic essays.

Credit Card Interest Rates Should Have A Ceiling

Posted on October 10, 2008 at 11:08 AM - Link

With the ongoing global economic crisis, people from different walks of life are affected. Rising credit card rates makes life tougher for a lot of card carrying citizens. There should definitely be a ceiling on credit card interest rates. Many deals have high interest rates where people could afford to pay the minimum amount, but often interest rates are double, or even more, compared to some loans. Many credit card companies have handsome credit card offers but use it as an instrument for credit expansion.

Consumers go out to purchase products and services; when they spend too much, it is very likely that they will have a hard time paying off what they borrowed because of steep fees. Often, it's a one way ticket to debt for a lot of credit card users. Banks eventually offer consumers to make the outstanding into loans.

Thailand has a universal ceiling of eighteen percent which is what can be charged on credit cards. South Korea has regulated the interest rates and quantum of advances. Placing a ceiling on interest rates can surely help consumers keep up with their credit card payments; and more importantly keep them from falling into debt. It is obviously a must for consumers to be careful when applying for a card. Compare credit cards and make sure that you are completely aware of terms and agreement.
